Easy fix, good part
Fast delivery, easy install, I thought it was a bit expensive all in for such a small piece of plastic. But sure beats calling a plumber

Upper Wash Arm Kit
Needed the above part but only the pin and plug - not the actual spinner. But since I had to order whole kit I had no choice. Would be nice if I could order just the pin and plug. The parts all came in good condition and I was satisfied.

Great easy purchase, with awesome instructional video!
This repair is quite easy to do, even with no experience, which is a good thing as it seems to be a common failure point on this model. I completed the repair by just undoing the top clips of the water tube to fit the plastic rivet in, rather than removing the whole assembly as they show in the video. But yes, if you do it that way, do put a towel down in the bottom to prevent losing the tiny plastic rivet that holds the wash arm on. I really only just needed the plastic rivet/bushing out of this kit as we had the wash arm, but if you’re replacing that, I suppose you might as well replace the wash arm as well anyways.

The old upper wash arm fell off.
I dropped the upper rack to its lowest position.
I pulled the upper water channel down from the spring clip [on the top of the washer] to get access to the hole on the top of the front end of the channel. The front end of the channel only drops an inch or two.
I put the new upper wash arm pivot [larger of the two small pieces] through the new upper washer arm from the bottom, placed the assembly up into the hole on the under side of the upper water channel, and snapped in the new keeper [smaller piece] through the hole in the top of the upper washer arm.
Finally, I snapped the upper water channel back into its spring clip. It was not even necessary to remove the racks.
There were no instructions or diagrams with the new parts, so it took me a few minutes to be sure which of the two small parts goes in from the bottom and which goes in from the top. Otherwise, I could have installed the new washer arm in one or two minutes.

Glasses in the top shelf had food bits - not rinsing well
The most difficult part of this was figuring out the problem was with the middle spray arm - that it was not spinning (and thus not rinsing the top dishes). I could spin it by hand fine - but if I watched its position while the machine was running (open/close the door) I saw it wasn't moving. I took out the top shelf (with spray arm attached) and connected it to the garden hose. I could see then that the arm was sagging and hitting the rear connection, preventing it from spinning. To replace I removed the plugs from the top shelf side-rails (bend the rail open with your thumb and tip the plugs out of the rail to the right for the left rail, to the left for the right rail. this is easier than pulling them out the end of the rail). Slide out the top shelf. Turn over, remove the phillips screw and pull off the manifold, and middle spray arm. Replace with the new parts. I also replaced the top spray arm (which was very loose, and probably not spraying well because it was so loose). For this I unclipped the top feed tube and pulled off the old sprayer. Put a towel in the bottom rack of the washer so you don't drop the little pieces into the pump below. The top spray arm simply snaps in with the two connectors (the pointy one attaches through the feed tube).

Upper Wash Arm fell out
Repair is a piece of cake, much to my relief. The difficult part, if you can call it that, is that when you go to put the small piece in the top that will ultimately hold the Upper Wash Arm in place - don't drop it. Drop it and you are screwed. It goes into the sump area, and you have to disassemble the whole bloody thing to retrieve it, which isn't maybe the easiest thing in the world to figure out. My recommendation would be to 1) remove the top dish rack so you've got a clear shot at it, and 2) cover the sump area with something, anything, that will prevent little bitty pieces that you drop from falling into that sump. Prevent this. Learn from a chump how not to be one yourself.

Top spinner fell off with each wash cycle.
The upper spinner fell off with each wash and I had been putting the pointy tac-like piece back into the washer type piece, but they did not hold. I ordered the whole kit (spinner was not needed but came with the set). The tac-looking part was the problem, it had been worn down with use. When pushing the new pieces together to hold the upper spinner back in place it was 100% fixed. Took about 10 seconds. Good luck!

Upper button holder allowed bottom wash arm to fall.
After I removed the button holder from the upper wash arm supply line, I put the new botton connecter in it's place. I then held the button in place, slightly bending down the water supply, while bring the wash arm, with the lower support in place, pushing the support onto the button holder. The whole thing took less than 30 seconds.

The upper wash arm fell off because the snap button had worn out
I simply pulled the top rack out as far as it would go, reached in and gently bent supply arm down so I could get the snap button (male end) in from the top. The female end and the wash arm then just snapped up into the male end. It took less than a minute. I probably saved about $75 doing this myself.

I found part 8538389, resting on the top rack of our kitchenaide dishwasher. Can i easily reinstall it. Can i run dishwasher without it in place?
Hello Mary,
Thank you for your question. You can easily reinstall the upper wash arm by following the installation video on our site for the part, and we suggest you install it because although it is possible to run the dishwasher without it, it could cause the dishes to not clean as well, and possible damage the water outlet the spray arm attaches too. We hope this helps.

Lower spray arm seems to be working and the dishes clean fine on bottom rack, but the upper rack doesn't get clean. I don't believe the upper sprayer is working so checked water channel to top and seem to be open. Could it be the water pump not providing enough water pressure for the upper sprayer arm even if the bottom arm is working?
For model number 66516473300
Hi Duane, thank you for your question. That could be. I would suggest double checking that all of your filters and your sump is free of debris/clogs. You may also just want to double check the holes in the upper wash arm and make sure they are not clogged over as well. If they are all fine, then it is likely your pump that is the issue. I hope that helps. Good luck with your repair.

Re: Upper wash arm kit: I installed the upper wash arm upside down. If i pull the arm from the pin and holding washer, will i damage the kit?
For model number KUDM01FKSS0
Hello, Thank you for your question. You should be okay to remove the Wash arm, but ensure you remove all parts as well so nothing is damaged if a screw is missed. We hope this helps.
